Dakar dream comes to a premature end for Pavey
Team Dome BMW's Simon Pavey has been forced to retire from the 2004 Telefonica Dakar Rally
after breaking his collarbone on yesterday's ninth stage. The 36-year-old Australian was just 30 km
from the finish of the 750 km special stage and would have had a two day rest period due to the
ally organisers being forced to cancel the following two day's stages - a fact that Pavey wouldn't
have been aware of.
Pavey had been riding with British rider Mick Extance and had been helping
him navigate in the
darkness because he didn't have any lights. The Team Dome BMW rider hit
a large bump that
unbalanced his F650 GS rally bike and caused him to crash heavily, injuring
his collarbone and
causing him to retire from the rally.
This is extremely bad luck for Pavey, because due to security reasons,
the organizers of the rally
have cancelled the 10th and 11th stages between Nema and Mopti and between Mopti and Bobo
Dioulasso. This decision was taken in accordance with the Mali and French
authorities.
All motorcycle competitors will now fly to Bobo Dioulasso where there will
be a rest day. This
would have given Pavey the opportunity to recuperate from several days racing with little or no
sleep, plus the support crew would have been able to service his rally
bike.
The 2004 Telefonica Dakar Rally continues as normal on Monday.
